Description

  • Indulge in savory mushroom and cheese puff pastry tarts—an easy recipe perfect for appetizers or light meals.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups cremini mushrooms, sliced (also known as baby bella mushrooms)
  • 7 ounces puff pastry dough, cut into two rectangles
  • 5 ounces gruyere, Jarlsberg, or Emmental cheese, grated
  • 3 shallots, thinly sliced into rings
  • 1 clove garlic, minced
  • 3 tablespoons butter
  • 2 tablespoons balsamic vinegar
  • 2 teaspoons soy sauce
  • ½ teaspoon dark brown sugar
  • 4 sprigs fresh thyme

Instructions

  • Preheat the Oven: Set your oven to 375°F (190°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or lightly grease it.
  • Prepare the Pastry Base: Place the puff pastry rectangles on the baking sheet. Sprinkle each piece with a layer of grated cheese, leaving about a ½-inch border around the edges for a crust.
  • Cook the Mushroom Mixture:
  • Melt butter in a large skillet over medium heat.
  • Add the sliced mushrooms, shallots, garlic, brown sugar, soy sauce, and balsamic vinegar.
  • Stir frequently and cook for 8–10 minutes, or until the mushrooms shrink and the shallots become soft and caramelized.
  • Turn off the heat and stir in the leaves from 2-3 sprigs of thyme.
  • Assemble the Tarts:
  • Use a slotted spoon to scoop the mushroom mixture onto the cheese-topped pastry, ensuring the border remains uncovered.
  • Sprinkle the top of the mushroom mixture with additional cheese and thyme for added flavor.
  • Optional Touch: Crimp the edges of the pastry with a fork for a decorative finish.
  • Bake: Place the tarts in the oven and bake for 21–26 minutes, or until the pastry turns golden brown and crisp.
  • Cool and Serve: Let the tarts rest for 5 minutes before serving. Enjoy them as a delightful appetizer or light meal!
  • Tips
  • Pair these savory tarts with a fresh salad or a warm bowl of soup for a complete meal.
  • While wine complements these tarts beautifully, they’re equally delightful with a cup of tea or sparkling water.
