Description

  • Learn how to make flavorful Cuban White Bean Soup with this easy, step-by-step recipe. Perfect for family gatherings

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound dried white beans (e.g., Great Northern), soaked overnight
  • 2 1/2 quarts water
  • 2 bay leaves
  • 6 ounces salt pork
  • 2 smoked ham hocks
  • 1/4 cup olive oil
  • 1 medium white onion, finely minced
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 teaspoons dried oregano
  • 1 teaspoon ground cumin
  • Kosher salt, to taste
  • Freshly ground black pepper, to taste

Instructions

  • Prepare the Beans:
  • Drain and rinse the soaked white beans to remove any residual starch.
  • Start the Soup Base:
  • In a large soup pot or Dutch oven, combine the beans, water, bay leaves, salt pork, and ham hocks. Bring the mixture to a boil over medium heat.
  • Simmer the Soup:
  • Once boiling, reduce the heat to low, cover the pot, and let the soup simmer for about 1 1/2 hours. During this time, skim off any foam that forms on the surface.
  • Remove and Process Meats:
  • After simmering, remove the salt pork and discard it. Take out the ham hocks, shred the meat, and discard the fat and bones. Return the shredded meat to the pot.
  • Prepare the Aromatics:
  • In a medium skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the minced onion and garlic, sautรฉing until soft and translucent, about 5 minutes.
  • Combine and Season:
  • Stir the sautรฉed onion and garlic mixture into the soup. Add the oregano, cumin, salt, and pepper to taste. Stir well to ensure the flavors are evenly distributed.
  • Final Simmer:
  • Allow the soup to simmer over low heat for an additional 15 minutes to let the flavors meld together.
  • Serve:
  • Ladle the warm, hearty soup into bowls and enjoy it as a comforting meal on its own or with a side of crusty bread.
