Description

  • Indulge in these Apple Crumble Bars with Oats and Caramel Sauce—perfectly spiced and topped with a buttery crumble.

Ingredients

Scale
  • For the Base and Crumble Topping:
  • 1 stick (1/2 cup) unsalted butter, melted
  • 2 cups (300g) all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup (100g) granulated sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • Pinch of salt
  • 1 large egg
  • For the Crumble Topping:
  • 1/3 cup (30g) rolled oats
  • For the Apple Filling:
  • 34 large Granny Smith apples, diced into 1/3-inch cubes (~4 cups)
  • 1/4 cup (35g) all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup (50g) granulated sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • For Serving:
  • Salted caramel sauce
  • Ice cream

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 350°F (180°C). Grease a 8-inch square baking pan and line it with parchment paper, allowing extra paper to hang over the sides for easy removal later.
  • In a large bowl, combine the melted butter, flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt. Mix until the flour is fully incorporated and there are no visible flour streaks. Add the egg and stir until well combined.
  • Press about two-thirds of the dough mixture into the bottom of the prepared baking pan. Bake in the preheated oven for about 15 minutes or until it is lightly golden. Once done, remove from the oven and let it cool for 5 minutes.
  • While the base is baking, prepare the apple filling. In a bowl, combine the diced apples with flour, sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Stir until the apples are evenly coated.
  • For the crumble topping, mix the oats into the remaining dough mixture, either using your hands or a spoon, until the oats are mostly incorporated.
  • Once the base has cooled slightly, spread the apple filling evenly over it. Crumble the topping mixture over the apples, making sure to cover the entire surface.
  • Return the pan to the oven and bake for an additional 30-35 minutes, or until the top is golden brown.
  • Remove from the oven and allow to cool in the pan. Once cooled, lift the dessert out of the pan using the parchment paper, cut into bars, and serve.
  • Serve the bars with a drizzle of salted caramel sauce and a scoop of ice cream for an extra indulgent treat!
